Competitive solvent extraction of alkaline-earth cations from aqueous solutions into chloroform by a series of lipophilic acyclic polyether dicarboxylic acids is reported. The influence of polyether chain length and of terminal carboxylic acid group variation upon extraction selectivity and efficiency is assessed. In the competitive extraction of concentrated magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium chloride solutions, one complexing agent exhibits pronounced selectivity for barium with Ba/sup 2 +//S/sup 2 +/ = 50, Ba/sup 2 +//Ca/sup 2 +/ = 250, and no detectable Mg/sup 2 +/ extraction. 20 references, 3 figures, 1 table.
