This paper reviews RandD works performed in the U.S.S.R. in the field of petroleum processing by hydrogenation, cracking, and hydrocracking. The program of future research is also outlined. It includes improvements in petroleum product quality, improvements in the thermal stability of fuels, minimizing the contents of sulfur, nitrogen, and other undesirable impurities in fuels, and control of harmful discharges to the environment are directly related to the expansion, intensification, and development of new hydrogenation processes.
