Consumers blaming fuel oil dealers for high heating bills should address their complaints to regulators, oil companies, and OPEC because the dealers are squeezed between high wholesale prices and reduced consumer demand. The search for new marketing opportunities has led some to merge and others to broaden their services by selling additional products in order to survive the shakeout period. Now that customers are turning to wood to reduce their oil consumption and extending their payment periods, dealers have lower profits and larger accounts receivable. Charging higher prices could accelerate the shift to cheaper fuels among their customers. 1 table. (DCK)
