Catalysts: Rhone-Poulenc boosts rare earth capacity

Rhone-Poulenc (RP) has brought a second rare-earths production unit onstream at La Rochelle, France. The new unit will double capacity for Actalys catalysts used in catalytic converters. RP has spent $12 million to develop the Actalys business during the past two years, including investment in the new unit. RP supplied catalysts worldwide for six million catalytic converters in 1996, primarily in Europe and the US. The company expects to increase production to 15 million units in 1997. {open_quotes}This rapid growth in Europe-and beyond-is due to antipollution legislation,{close_quotes} says an RP spokesperson.
