Aromatic hydrocarbons make up a considerable part of jet fuels. The content of aromatic hydrocarbons in the different grades of fuels is regulated very strictly within limits of 10-22% by weight. The rigid limits on the content of aromatic hydrocarbons in jet fuel are set primarily by the conditions of combustion and the possibility of forming carbon deposits. In the reported experiments, the authors have studied the oxidizability of mixtures of different monotypical structural groups of hydrocarbons that have been segregated from fuels, produced from different types of feedstocks by different manufacturing processes. Extensive experimental data are tabulated and evaluated. It is shown that the oxidizability of aromatic hydrocarbons is incomparably greater than that of paraffinic and naphthanic hydrocarbons; the oxidizability of a blend of jet fuel hydrocarbons (after removing the nonhydrocarbon compounds) is determined mainly by the content and composition (chemical structure) of the aromatic hydrocarbons; of the alkylmonocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the most resistant to oxidation are those having saturated side chains attached to the benzene ring by secondary and primary carbon atoms. 10 refs.
