The impact of conservatism on risk assessments at Superfund sites

Current EPA guidelines encourage the use of conservative assumptions in the calculation of cancer and noncancer risks to human health at Superfund sites. In this paper we examine the impact of varying the parameters used to calculate lifetime excess cancer rates arising from exposure to chemicals at Superfund sites and discuss the implications of our sensitivity analysis for risk assessment policies relating to hazardous waste.
