Electro-optical remote sensing technology trends

Conference ·
OSTI ID:549161

Trends in passive electro-optical technology for the NASA Landsat and Mission to Planet Earth programs are representative of overall trends in remote sensing. The Earth science research emphasis originated by NASA`s Landsat system continues with the development of NASA`s Mission to Planet Earth. A brief review of specific sensors for both programs will illustrate the technology trends to date to support environmental research and management. Additionally, Landsat`s transition in the mid-1980`s from a research to a more operational and even commercial remote sensing tool is part of a trend to apply remote sensing technology to support commercial information services. The technology implications differ somewhat from research and operational remote sensing requirements.
