Ecosystem management involves both the design and management of complex ecological systems. This involves the application of {open_quotes}ecological engineering{close_quotes} principles. There are many alternative {open_quotes}states{close_quotes} of a landscape, all of which are ecologically sustainable. Once one fulfills the constraints of healthy, diverse, self-reproducing stocks of desirable species, there exists a wide array of alternative states, the characteristics of which represent social, economic and lifestyle trade-offs. There is no single {open_quotes}right{close_quotes} ecological design. Case studies will be used to illustrate these points.
