Innovative environmental technologies in the Department of Defense

Conference ·
OSTI ID:549148
Protecting and sustaining the environment is integral to the mission of the Department of Defense (DoD). Environmental security is just one aspect of the Department`s larger role of protecting our national security. Our goals are to bring DoD operations into full compliance with all applicable health and environmental standards, to reduce the risk to the public and the environment at all our sites, to manage responsibly the more than 25 million acres of land the Department holds in the public trust, to prevent pollution from our activities, and to promote the development of innovative environmental technologies to achieve these goals and promote economic growth. The DoD is both a holder of environmental problems and creator of potential solutions. As both the developer and user of innovative environmental technologies, the DoD is actively pursuing the demonstration and validation of new technologies that will significantly reduce the cost and risks associated with managing toxic and hazardous materials. The Department`s programs to achieve these goals will be reviewed. The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, a new initiative of the DoD to move innovative technologies out of the lab into the real world, will be highlighted.
