The Creys-Malville fast breeder reactor (FBR) (Superphenix) is a European plant built by Nucleaire Europeenne Rapide S.A. After initial connection to the grid on January 14, 1986, the Creys-Malville plant reached full power on December 9, 1986. This first operational period confirmed the ease of controlling this type of plant because of thermal inertia and reactor stability. Unfortunately, with the appearance of a sodium leak in the main vessel of the fuel storage drum, during shutdown from May 26, 1987, to January 14, 1989, it was necessary to determine the cause of the incident and find the repair solution and implement the actions requested by the safety authorities to improve reactor vessel resistance and reliability and, as an additional precaution, to define the intervention resources needed in the event of a leak from the main vessel. The plant is operating again without a fuel storage drum by using the limits of reactor fuel life; when a storage system becomes available, operations will use new fuel management practices.
