Some applications of optimization techniques to power systems problems

Journal Article · · Proc. IEEE; (United States)

Important power system planning and operational problems are formulated as mathematical optimization problems and solved, including: economic dispatch; pollution dispatch; maximal interchange; hydrothermal unit commitment and dispatch; generation, transmission, and distribution expansion planning; maintenance scheduling; and substation switching. Modern mathematical optimization techniques, such as nonlinear, quadratic, linear, integer, and dynamic programming, are used. Some formulations and solutions to these problems presented in recent literature are reviewed. Specific areas in need of more investigation are listed. (1 diagram, 101 tables)
