The observation of sequential attachment of two electrons to the C{sub 84} molecule and the subsequent autodetachment of the C{sub 84} dianion is reported. Remarkably, the cross section for attaching the second electron is estimated to be of the same order as that for adding the first electron. The measured lifetime for autodetachment of C{sub 84}{sup -2} ({approximately}60{mu}sec) is in accord with calculations assuming {open_quotes}thermionic emission{close_quotes} from the vibrationally hot dianion. The first (EA{sub 1}) and second (EA{sub 2}) electron affinities of the two low-lying D{sub 2} and D{sub 2d} isomers of C{sub 84} are calculated using density functional theory to be +3.14 and +0.44eV , respectively. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
