Title: Geothermal energy - the power under our feet

Journal Article · · Sci. Dig. (Chicago); (United States)
OSTI ID:5487337

Geothermal energy provides less than .1% of US electricity needs. By 1985, this energy could supply 10-15%, resulting in fuel savings equal to the annual gas consumption of the 90 million cars currently on the road. Heat from the earth is already warming buildings in Iceland, New Zealand, and Japan. Environmental and pollution problems of geothermal steam are much easier to control than those of fossil fuels. Governmental efforts to develop this resource are outlined. (2 drawings, 5 photos)
