In 1987, Southern California Edison Company (SCE) loaded fuel into San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 2, which had a cycle length of 555 effective full-power days. In order to obtain the maximum economic advantage of this increased fuel cycle design length, a program was developed to examine the suitability of extending the surveillance interval for refueling type surveillances. The purpose of this paper is to describe the program developed by SCE, problems encountered in carrying out this program, and the present status of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval of the extension requests.
