Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) involvement in reactor decommissioning began with development of the tools and techniques for the Elk River Reactor in Minnesota, the world's first decommissioning project. The author reviews the problems involved in three basic methods: entombment, safe storage plus delayed dismantlement, and prompt dismantlement. He describes the experience at the Elk River Reactor and outlines plans for the Shippingport plant. The need for early retirement of several plants because of radiation embrittlement will involve new problems and require new skills. (DCK)
