Over the past few years, the nuclear power industry has devoted a great deal of attention to achieving equipment qualification. As this goal approaches, the attention of prudent utilities is now being directed toward maintaining that qualification throughout the useful life of the equipment. This paper presents a Qualification Maintenance Program (QMP), which is designed to meet the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements for ongoing qualification maintenance of safety-related equipment. This paper describes this program by answering the following four questions: What is QMP. Why is a QMP necessary. What are the benefits of a QMP. How can QMP best be achieved. Following the discussion of the above questions, an example is presented that illustrates a typical application of QMP in defining plant equipment maintenance requirements.
