Energy from the West: a technology assessment of western energy resource development

Book ·
OSTI ID:5486577
If the US is to derease its dependence on foreign oil, it must develop the energy resources in the eight western states that are rich in coal, oil, oil shale, natural gas, uranium, and other energy resources. This interdisciplinary study explores the consequences of large-scale energy development in the key states of Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming - and analyzes what can be done to realize the benefits of development while minimizing the costs. The central energy-development problems in the West are water availability, air and water quality, land use and reclamation, housing, growth management, capital availability, energy transportation, and facility siting. A chapter is devoted to each of these problems to assist decision makers in government and industry and concerned citizens. 652 references, 46 figures, 86 tables.
