Four capsules were fabricated as part of the SP-100 Thermionic Technology Program to investigate the long-term performance of thermionic fuel element components. The testing was carried out in General Atomics' TRIGA Mark-F reactor at typical nuclear space reactor operating conditions. Three of the capsules have been retired from testing, and the initial phase of destructive postirradiation examination (PIE) has been completed. This paper describes the special techniques, procedures, and equipment used to perform the PIE. The work includes the transfer of the capsules to the hot cell and the disassembly and recovery of the thermionic specimens.
