Petroleum geology
Part 1 of this book considers the background needed to understand petroleum occurrences: concepts of sedimentary basins, their early deformation and the compaction of their sediments; drilling and logging boreholes and the nature of the data acquired; the nature of oil and gas fields and their reservoirs; and the origin, migration, and accumulation of petroleum. Part 2 considers the petroleum geology of transgressive sequences (reefs, palaeogeomorphic, and unconformity traps). In Part 3, the petroleum geology of regressive sequences (abnormal pressures, diapirism and growth structures) is treated. In these two parts, specific petroleum occurrences are examined in the light of the principles developed in the first part. Many petroleum provinces are areas that could not have been studied without the expected commercial benefits so petroleum geology contributes significant ideas to geology in general, and reveals principles that would never have been detected from the study of outcrops alone.
