Energy transfer in the luminescent system Na(Y,Gd)F/sub 4/:Ce,Tb
The luminescent properties of hexagonal NaY/sub 0.98-x/Gd/sub chi/Ce/sub 0.01/Tb/sub 0.01/F/sub 4/ have been investigated. For chi > 0.45 and at room temperature, excitation into the Ce/sup 3+/ ion (lambda/sub exc/ = 254 nm) results mainly in Tb/sup 3+/ emission. The authors also observed two different Ce/sup 3+/ emissions. This is related to the crystal structure of NaGdF/sub 4/:Ce,Tb. It is shown that the excitation energy migrates from the Ce/sup 3+/ ion over the Gd/sup 3+/ sublattice to the Tb/sup 3+/ traps. Energy transfer probabilities for this process are derived and compared with the probabilities derived for the system LiGdF/sub 4/:Ce,Tb, which leads to some recommendations for the use of the Ce/sup 3+/ ion as a sensitizer of the Gd/sup 3+/ ion.
