Production of high P/sub T/ photons in proton-beryllium collisions

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5484264
Hadronic ..pi../sup 0/ and direct photon production was measured in a large acceptance liquid argon calorimeter using a 300 GeV/c proton beam incident on a beryllium target. ..pi../sup 0/ and single ..gamma.. cross sections were obtained. Monte Carlo backgrounds to the single ..gamma.. signal were calculated for ..pi../sup 0/ and eta/sup 0/ decay sources with their normalization based on the number of ..pi../sup 0/'s and eta/sup 0/'s observed. After single ..gamma.. background subtraction, the ratio of cross sections, ..gamma../..pi../sup 0/, was found to increase steadily from 0.05 at p/sub t/ = 2.0 GeV/c to values approaching one at p/sub t/ = 6.0 GeV/c, indicating a significant increase in direct ..gamma.. relative to ..pi../sup 0/ production in this range.
