Properties of solvated electrons, alkali anions and other species in metal solutions and kinetics of cation and electron exchange reactions. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5482931
The properties of solutions of alkali metals in amine solvents were studied by optical, ETR, NMR and electrochemical methods. Complexation of the alkali cations by crown ethers and cryptands permitted the preparation of concentrated solutions of alkali metals in amine and ether solvents. Extensive alkali metal NMR studies of the exchange of M/sup +/ with crown-ethers and cryptands and of the alkali metal anion, M/sup -/, were made. The first crystalline salt of an alkali metal anion, Na/sup +/ Cryptand (2.2.2)Na/sup -/ was synthesized and characterized and led to the preparation of other alkali metal anion salts. This research provided the foundation for continuing studies of crystalline alkalide salts.
