O/sub 2/ pressure broadening of the iodine /sup 2/P/sub 1/2/. -->. /sup 2/P/sub 3/2/ transition

The pressure broadening coefficient for the I(/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/..-->../sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) transition by O/sub 2/ has been measured using a high resolution Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer. Spontaneous emission from a microwave excited mixture of oxygen and iodine was spectrally resolved using the center spot scanning technique. The broadening coefficient was measured at O/sub 2/ pressures of 1--10 Torr and found to be 7.5 +- 1.5 MHz/Torr at 300 K.
