Ground water protection efforts in four new england states. Technical report
The motivation for the study (a set of four case studies) emanates from the Wellhead Protection (WHP) Program, mandated under Section 1428(e) of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986. The program is intended to protect areas of public water supply from sources of anthropogenic contamination that pose an existing or potential threat to public health. In anticipation of this effort, the study surveys and evaluates local ground water and wellhead protection strategies in representative, but progressive communities in New England: Springfield, Vermont; Topsham, Maine; Merrimack, New Hampshire; North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The case study method is employed on the premise that the lessons drawn from the four communities will be useful to EPA and State agencies in providing guidance to other communities in the region.
