Decay kinetics of the 6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/D/sub 2/ lower active level in a pulsed lead vapor laser

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Quant. Electron. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
Resonant absorption of light due to the 7s/sup 3/ P/sup 0//sub 1/--6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/D/sub 2/ transition in the lead atom was used to study the decay of the 6p/sup 2/ /sup 1/D/sub 2/ lower active level in a pulsed lead vapor laser during the afterglow of a pulsed discharge in a mixture of lead vapor and neon buffer gas. Two characteristic decay times were observed: tau/sub 1/ = 2 ..mu..sec immediately after the excitation pulse and tau/sub 2/ = 10 ..mu..sec in the later stages of the afterglow. Possible mechanisms for decay of the level of the lead atom under study are discussed.
