Sample of long-period variables in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud and evidence for a recent burst of star formation

The sample of long period variables discovered by Paltoglou et al. (1983) in and to the north of the bar of the LMC is subjected to IR JHK photometry. The carbon stars and oxygen-rich stars are noted to obey different period-luminosity relations, with the carbon stars having longer periods at a given luminosity. The period-luminosity distribution of the long period variables in the central bar of the LMC suggests that the bulk of the stars in this region have main sequence masses smaller than 1.6 solar masses and ages greater than 1 billion years, and that there is a distinct group of stars in this region with main sequence masses of about 5-6 solar masses and an age of about 60 million years. 41 references.
