Precise measurements of hyperfine structure in the 2/sup 3/P state of /sup 3/He

Using the atomic beam optical microwave magnetic resonance technique transitions within the (1s2p) 2/sup 3/P state of /sup 3/He were measured to determine the hyperfine parameters C, D, and E. These parameters represent, respectively, the contact interaction of the 1s electron and the orbital and dipolar interactions of the 2p electron with the nuclear dipole moment. For the first time, the effect of core polarization on the 2p electron's hyperfine interaction has been detected. The present results are C = -4283.84 /sub -0.01/+0.02 MHz; D = -28.06(6) MHz; E = 7.10(2) MHz, and are consistent with the theoretical values. In obtaining these results, nuclear mass dependent corrections were applied to the fine structure of the 2/sup 3/P state of /sup 4/He to obtain the fine structure of the same state of /sup 3/He, and the combined fine and hyperfine interactions with the 2/sup 1/P state were taken into account.
