After examining the frequency deviation and modulation bandwidth characteristics required for the phase-locking of optically-pumped, far-infrared lasers to reference synthesized signals, suitable fast modulation techniques are discussed with attention to their unique features. Experimental results on laser frequency modulation by means of the Stark effect, injection locking, and such electrically variable reactance devices as Schottky diodes and the plasma cell, are compared. The Stark effect appears useful for laser emission lines up to 8.0 THz. The most important requirements are found to be the module parameters and suitable quantum numbers for the transition involved.
