Relativistic uranium beams - the Bevalac experience

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci.; (United States)
This paper addresses areas where relativistic heavy ion accelerators differ from proton facilities. Salient areas are: the specialized injectors for heavy ions; ion sources, structures for very low charge-to-mass ratio (q/A) ions, and stripper optimization; special requirements for the synchrotron ring; ultrahigh vacuum, flexible controls and instrumentation. These areas are discussed in the context of the Bevalac as well as an idea for a next-generation relativistic heavy ion accelerator.
