The rate constants for the reactions of the ethynyl radical (C{sub 2}H) with CH{sub 4}, C{sub 2}H{sub 6}, C{sub 2}H{sub 4}, D{sub 2}, and CO have been determined by following the time decay of a C{sub 2}H infrared transient absorption line originating from the ground vibronic state using diode laser spectroscopy. The C{sub 2}H was created by excimer laser flash photolysis (ArF, 193 nm) of CF{sub 3}CCH. Relaxation of excited states of C{sub 2}H was achieved by buffering the photolysis cell with {approx}20 Torr of He buffer and {approx}130 mTorr of SF{sub 6}. When possible, the dependence of the reaction rate on helium pressure was investigated over the range of 8-70 Torr. Second-order rate constants of 3.0 (2) {times} 10{sup {minus}12}, 1.3 (3) {times} 10{sup {minus}10}, 3.6 (2) {times} 10{sup {minus}11}, 2.3 (3) {times} 10{sup {minus}13} cm{sup 3} molecule{sup {minus}1} s{sup {minus}1} were obtained for the reactions of C{sub 2}H with CH{sub 4}, C{sub 2}H{sub 4}, C{sub 2}H{sub 6}, and D{sub 2}, respectively.
