A mathematical model developed to evaluate the economic impacts of requiring returnable glass containers as an alternative method of glass recycling is presented. Industry managers can help to minimize economic impacts of proposed bans on non-returnable glass containers by: encouraging the standardization of laws and law enforcement; printing notices on packages to discourage improper disposal of bottles; encouraging legislation that requires litter bags in vehicles; and advertising to discourage littering.
