Sunspot motions and magnetic shears as precursors of flares

Journal Article · · Adv. Space Res.; (United States)
Full-disk white light photoheliograms have been used to study the motions of sunspot umbrae within a large complex of activity in which shearing motions of adjacent flux patterns were conspicuous. The study extended over four periods of rotation from May to August 1980. The results indicate that the proper motions of sunspots are associated with flare occurrences. The flare activity of a spot group increases when: (1) there are high-velocity relative motions among spots of opposite polarity within the group and (2) soon after the leader spot of a group moves rapidly in the direction identical with solar rotation. Both of these types of spot motion may be regarded as flare precursors.
