Measurement of weak branching out of the (near-) two-level system Ba 6s6p /sup 1/P/sub 1/left-right-arrow6s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/

Weak branching out of the 6s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/left-right-arrow6s6p /sup 1/P/sub 1/ two-level system to the metastable 6s5d /sup 1,3/D states has been measured for /sup 138/Ba using cw-resonance ionization mass spectrometry on an optically pumped atomic beam. A branching ratio (inverse branching fraction) of 440 +- 40 was obtained.
