Chemical control of acid smut from oil-fired boilers

Sources of acid smutthe black, acidic, carbonaceous matter resulting from an incomplete combustion process in oil-fired boilersare identified. Methods of monitoring, measuring, and minimizing acid smut emissions are discussed. Chemical additives to improve fuel burning, to minimize oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, and to neutralize condensed acid all will contribute significantly to acid smut control. The coordinated efforts of the field engineer staff, laboratory analysis staff, and utility engineers will be required to develop the criteria necessary for optimal acid smut control.
