Parametric analysis of the energy levels of U/sup 4 +/ in D/sub 2d/ and limiting D/sub 2/ sites in incommensurate ThBr/sub 4/

Below T/sub c/ = 95 K, U/sup 4 +/:ThBr/sub 4/ exists as an incommensurately modulated structure. The U/sup 4 +/ ions occupy a range of sites which vary from D/sub 2d/ to a limiting D/sub 2/ site. The D/sub 2d/ and limiting D/sub 2/ sites have been identifed spectroscopically. We report a parametric analysis of the U/sup 4 +/ energy levels in both sites. For 26 levels in the D/sub 2d/ site the root-mean-square deviation sigma = 36 cm/sup -1/ and F/sup 2/ = 42 253 +- 127, F/sup 4/ = 40 458 +- 489, F/sup 6/ = 25 881 +- 383, zeta = 1783 +- 7, ..cap alpha.. = 31 +- 1, ..beta.. = -644 +- 75, ..gamma.. = 1200, B/sub 0//sup 2/ = -1096 +- 80, B/sub 0//sup 4/ = 1316 +- 146, B/sub 4//sup 4/ = -2230 +- 85, B/sub 0//sup 6/ = -3170 +- 379, and B/sub 4//sup 6/ = 686 +- 246, all in cm/sup -1/. For 38 D/sub 2/ levels sigma = 39 cm/sup -1/, and those parameters which occur in both symmetries are only slightly changed. The additional parameters which occur only in D/sub 2/ symmetry are B/sub 2//sup 2/ = -78 +- 30, B/sub 2//sup 4/ = 318 +- 122, B/sub 2//sup 6/ = 136 +- 101, B/sub 6//sup 6/ = 123 +- 125, all in cm/sup -1/. F/sup 2/ is 81% of the free-ion value. This decrease in F/sup 2/ is more like that found for 3d than that found for 4f electrons.
