Measurement of total cross sections and diffraction peak slope parameter of elastic. pi. /sup -/D and. pi. /sup -4/He scattering at 40. 4 GeV

An apparatus consisting of a recoil-nucleus detector and a scattered-particle magnetic spectrometer has been used to measure absolute differential cross sections for elastic scattering of ..pi../sup -/ mesons with momentum 40.4 GeV/c by deuterons in the momentum-transfer interval 0.004< or =Vertical BartVertical Bar< or =0.041 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ and by helium in the interval 0.013< or =Vertical BartVertical Bar< or =0.112 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. Total cross sections for ..pi../sup -/D and ..pi../sup -4/He interactions have been calculated by means of the optical theorem. Values of the diffraction-peak slope and the total elastic cross sections have been obtained. The results of the experiment are compared with calculations according to the Glauber model. The contribution of inelastic screening to the total cross section for the ..pi../sup -4/He interaction is determined.
