Caspian Sea to remain Soviets' prime exploration target through this decade

Several large, undrilled anticlines in the Caspian Sea's southern basin could hold more than 37 trillion CF of gas. Soviet geologists compare the potential of its deep, Mesozoic reef formations with Mexico's Reforma and Golden Lane areas. The USSR, preoccupied with its rich onshore oil and gas reserves, has failed to test most of the attractive structures detected in the area by geophysical surveys during the late 1970s. Not until August 1981 did the Soviets spud a hole in water over 276 ft deep; in 1980 only five mobile drilling rigs (all jackups) were working in the Caspian. Plans call for an increase to 13 rigs (including 3-5 semisubmersibles) by 1985 and 23 in 1990. Under the government's current and subsequent 5-year plan, the USSR offshore program will achieve record growth, with the Caspian Sea as its prime target.
