The effect of an acidic catalyst on simultaneous hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation of heterocyclic sulfur and nitrogen (thiophene and pyridine)
The hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene and the hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of pyridine over metal sulfides on acidic catalyst supports was studied in this research. Four sulfided catalysts were considered; CoMo-SiO/sub 2//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, CoMo-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, NiW-SiO/sub 2//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and NiW-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. These catalysts were chosen in an effort to isolate the effect of the metallic sulfide (CoMo or NiW) and the effect of the acidic support (SiO/sub 2//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ or Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/). Reaction conditions of 200 to 400/sup 0/C and .27 to 1.4 M Pa were used. No consistent effect of the metal sulfide (Ni-W vs. CoMo) was observed, but the more acidic silica-alumina support was the more effective support for the HDN of pure pyridine. Alumina was a more effective support for the HDS of pure thiophene and for the HDS of thiophene and the HDN of pyridine in mixed feeds. A two-site reaction mechanism, based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, was used to model the HDS of thiophene, but a single site analysis described the reaction of pyridine. Values of activation energies are calculated for HDS of thiophene and HDN of pyridine from pure feeds and from 50/50 mixtures of thiophene.
