Passive Solar Energy Book

Book ·
OSTI ID:5473955
The basics of solar energy and heat theory are described. The three basic types of passive systems are discussed, along with photos and art of existing architectural examples and performance data of each. Design patterns or rules of thumb are presented that together form a step-by-step process for choosing and sizing a system suited to one's particular situation. Such considerations as building location, shape, and orientation; materials; windows; thermal mass for heat storage; and movable insulation are discussed. Graphic tools like sun charts and radiation and shading calculators are included. Tables on degree-days, average temperatures for each month, and conversion factors are presented in appendices. (MHR)
