The electrochemical reduction of CrO/sub 4//sup 2 -/ proceeds through a Cr(V) intermediate, CrO/sub 4//sup -3/. The reaction of this intermediate with the available cations and the concentrations of these cations determine the overall reaction mechanism and the ultimate reduction product. In LiCl-KCl eutectic, CaCrO/sub 4/ (> about 0.1m) is reduced to the stable intermediate Ca/sub 5/(CrO/sub 4/)/sub 3/Cl. In CaCl/sub 2//sup -/ KCl-NaCl ternary eutectic CaCrO/sub 4/ (> about 0.1m) is reduced to the stable intermediate Ca/sub 2/CrO/sub 4/Cl. In the presence of Li/sup +/, each of these Cr(V) compounds is further reduced to LiCrO/sub 2/. No subsequent reduction of Ca/sub 5/(CrO/sub 4/)/sub 3/Cl or Ca/sub 2/CrO/sub 4/Cl occurs in CaCl/sub 2/-KCl-NaCl ternary eutectic.
