Excitation of large amplitude wake fields in a plasma for acceleration of particles is theoretically and computationally considered. The wake electric field can be generated either by short laser pulses or charged particle (electrons) beam pulses. We treat both cases from a unified point of view and compare them. In two (or three) dimensional investigations, the wake causing agencies are treated as rigid, while in the one dimensional cases the feedback of the wake field on the driving pulse is accounted for fully kinetically and relativistically. We elucidate transverse and longitudinal wavebreaking effects, nonlinear wake field effects, pulse shaping, multiple pulses, the coherency length of wake fields and comparison of laser and electron beam pulses. 11 refs., 14 figs.
