The effect of suspensions of Lago Medio crude oil and the oil dispersant Corexit 9527 on marine phytoplankton production was determined in situ by measuring the rate of inorganic carbon fixation by a natural marine phytoplankton community during acute exposure to oil-seawater and oil-dispersant-seawater suspensions containing 0.01 to 6.00 mg oil. Dose response relationship between ambient oil concentrations and carbon fixation was the same in oil-dispersant-seawater suspensions as in oil-seawater suspensions. Oil dispersed with Corexit 9527 is probably no more toxic to phytoplankton than oil dispersed physically is. (1 graph, 1 table)
