Title: Process for gasification of cellulosic biomass

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5473182

A process is described for gasification of cellulosic biomass in a single gasification and combustion vessel comprising the steps: introducing cellulosic biomass of up to about 50 weight percent moisture directly into a single, highly back-mixed fluidized bed of high heat capacity inert solids in the vessel; maintaining the fluidized bed at temperatures of about 1200/sup 0/ to about 1600/sup 0/F, the highly back-mixed fluidized state maintaining the temperature variation throughout the height of the fluidized bed at less than about 75/sup 0/F, at a pressure of up to about 500 psig; mixing the devolatilized biomass throughout the fluidized bed and gasifying a substantial portion of the devolatilized biomass by reaction with hydrogen and steam within the upper portion of the bed producing methane, carbon oxides, hydrogen and biomass residue; combusting the biomass residue in an oxygen-rich atmosphere in a combustion zone in a lower portion of the bed to principally form heat and biomass ash, the heat being directly transferred to the inert solids in the single fluidized bed to maintain the fluidized bed temperatures; introducing and distributing oxygen containing gas to the bed below the combustion zone to maintain the oxygen-rich atmosphere, the oxygen introduced in an amount which is substantially less than stoichiometrically required for combustion of the biomass residue, so that the oxygen containing gas is substantially consumed in the combustion zone; removing formed gases, vapor and substantially all of the biomass ash in a gas stream from the top of the gasification vessel; and maintaining the introduction of cellulosic biomass to the bed at a point where the combustion consumes principally biomass residue.
