GUTs 3: susy GUTs 2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5472563
We compare the phenomenological predictions of grand unified theories (GUTs) and supersymmetric (susy) GUTs for nucleon decays, sin /sup 2/theta/sub W/ and m/sub b//m/sub tau/. Conventional GUTs are consistent with experiment for all three of these observables. In contrast with previous analyses, we find that susy GUTs have problems with sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/, but not with m/sub b//m/sub tau/ or the experimental lower limit on the nucleon lifetime. This explains the half-time score line in the title. Susy GUTs may cause nucleon decays with an observable lifetime: in the simplest SU(5) susy GUT we find GAMMA(N ..-->.. anti..nu../sub tau/K) >> GAMMA(N ..-->.. anti..nu../sub ..mu../K) >> GAMMA(N ..-->.. anti..nu pi.., ..mu../sup +/K) >> GAMMA(N ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..pi..) >> GAMMA(N ..-->.. e/sup +/K) >> GAMMA(N ..-->.. e/sup +/..pi..).
