The average binding energy per nucleon in nuclear matter had recently been calculated in the framework of a model space approach, including the sum of the particle-particle and hole-hole ring diagrams to all orders. It is pointed out that, in the case of the {ital V}{sub 14} interaction, the calculated saturation properties are at variance with an upper bound evaluated from a variational method; they are also quite different from those derived from the standard hole-line expansion. It is suggested that these differences might be due to bubble contributions that have, in part, been omitted in the model space approach. It is also proposed to use the summation of particle-particle and hole-hole ring diagrams to test the convergence of the standard hole-line expansion.
