Conversion of methanol to olefins in a tubular reactor with light olefin co-feeding

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5470103
A process is described of converting a feed comprising at least one lower aliphatic alcohol having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and/or corresponding ethers of such alcohols, alone or in admixture with water, into a predominantly olefinic hydrocarbon product comprising at least 50 wt. % olefins. The feed is contacted with a dehydration catalyst at elevated temperatures in a first reaction zone comprising a dehydration reactor to obtain a product comprising a mixture of water and at least one ether, and the product from the first reaction zone is thereafter contacted with a crystalline silicate zeolite in a second reaction zone at elevated temperatures and under exothermic reaction conditions to obtain the hydrocarbon products comprising olefins. The zeolite is a zeolite having a silica-to-alumina ratio of at least about 12, and a Constraint Index of about 1 to 12, and the second reaction zone comprising a tubular reactor wherein the crystalline silicate zeolite is confined within a plurality of adjacent elongated tubular reaction zones, the improvement comprising cofeeding with the feed about 0.5-3 % by weight of the feed a light olefin to the dehydration reactor to stabilize the conversion operation.
