Air pollution from oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5469580
The contributions of mobile and stationary sources to the atmospheric burden of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and total hydrocarbons are reviewed. The main sources of nitrogen oxide emissions are power stations, motor vehicles and commercial and industrial operations; carbon monoxide emissions arise mainly from motor vehicle exhaust and hydrocarbon emissions come mainly from motor vehicles and stationary non-combustion sources. Measurements of ambient concentrations of these and other pollutants indicate that stationary sources make a significant contribution to kerbside nitric oxide and total hydrocarbon concentrations. Over the period 1972 to 1977 there have been no significant trends detectable in ambient concentrations of the pollutants considered in this report. (Copyright (c) Crown Copyright 1979.)
