Possibility of observing production of electron-positron pairs by a photon in the field of an intense electromagnetic wave

We show that it is possible to observe experimentally the subthreshold production of e/sup +/e/sup -/ pairs in the field of an intense electromagnetic wave in the planned accelerators VLEPP, SLC, and LEP. This process will represent a substantial background in obtaining colliding ..gamma..e and ..gamma gamma.. beams (I. F. Ginzburg et al., preprint 81--102, Institute of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Division, USSR Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk, 1981).
