Competitive solvent extraction of alkali-metal cations from aqueous solutions into chloroform by a series of lipophilic dibenzocrown ethers with pendant carboxylic acid groups has been investigated. Both the extraction selectivity and efficiency are influenced by variations of the crown ether ring size and the attachment site of the lipophilic group. Preorganization of the binding site by proper positioning of the lipophilic group enhances extraction selectivity. Very high Na{sup +} extraction selectivity (Na{sup +}/K{sup +} = 32, Na{sup +}/Li{sup +} = 66 and no detectable extraction of Rb{sup +} or Cs{sup +}) was obtained with sym-decyldibenzo-16-crown-5-oxyacetic acid.
