Effective one-loop Lagrangian for nonlinear. sigma. models coupled to gravity

A simple application of covariant-derivative expansion techniques to compute the divergent one-loop contributions to the effective action for a nonlinear {sigma} model coupled to gravity is presented. The results are then applied to a class of superstring-inspired supergravity models.
